TI and HI, explained

TI is the tier: how many cases sit in one layer. HI is the height: how many layers stack on the pallet. Multiply them and you have cases per pallet. The worked example above is TI 16, HI 5, so 80 cases.

The pair matters beyond arithmetic. Retailer routing guides ask for TI and HI on new item setup forms, co-packers build to them, and a 3PL quoting your storage wants them before your freight arrives. If you have ever been asked for a “pallet configuration,” this is it.

How the math works

Cases per layer is geometry: how many case footprints fit inside the pallet footprint with no overhang. The calculator tries the case in both orientations, and also checks whether the leftover strip along one edge fits a row of rotated cases on top of the block pattern, then keeps the best count.

Layers is the smaller of two caps. Height: how many case heights fit between the top of the deck and your maximum load height. Weight: how many full layers stay under your maximum load weight once the pallet’s own tare weight is counted. The result panel tells you which cap decided the number, because the fix is different: a height-bound pallet wants a shorter case or a taller cap, a weight-bound pallet wants lighter layers.

Real stacking has variations the math deliberately leaves to people who can see the freight: interlocked and pinwheel patterns that trade count for stability, slip sheets and tier sheets that add height, and cases that compress under load. Treat the result as the planning number to hand your 3PL or carrier, not as a packing instruction.

Standard pallet sizes

The calculator’s presets cover the footprints you will actually be quoted against. The 48 by 40 inch GMA pallet dominates North American grocery and retail; square sizes serve drums, bulk bags and specialty freight; the EUR pallet is the European standard.

Setting the height and weight caps

The right caps are whatever binds first in your operation, and they are worth finding out rather than guessing. Rack beam openings set a hard ceiling per position. A trailer plan that double-stacks needs each load short enough that two fit the door height. Clamp trucks, mezzanines and sprinkler clearance rules all impose their own limits, and the cases themselves have a stacking strength that crushing will find for you.

The default here is 60 inches including the pallet, a common warehouse program cap; loads built nearer 50 inches are what double-stack in a dry van. If your 3PL quotes storage by pallet position, ask what height a position assumes: a load built four inches over the opening pays for a second position or gets reworked.

What cube utilization tells you

Cube utilization is case volume on the pallet divided by the space available to it: footprint times usable height. The gap between that number and 100 percent is air you are paying to store and ship.

Low utilization usually traces to one of three causes: a case footprint that tiles the deck badly, a case height that leaves a tall gap under the cap, or a weight cap cutting layers before height does. Small carton changes move the number a lot, which is why it is worth checking before a packaging run, not after.

Pallets and 3PL pricing

Most 3PLs bill storage per pallet position per month, and many bill receiving per pallet too, so cases per pallet is the denominator under a real share of your fulfillment bill. The same 500 cases at 80 per pallet is 7 positions; at 48 per pallet it is 11. Pallet questions

How many cases fit on a pallet?
Divide the pallet footprint by the case footprint to get cases per layer, then divide the usable stacking height by the case height to get layers, and multiply the two. A 12 by 10 by 10 inch case on a 48 by 40 inch pallet stacks 16 cases per layer, and five layers fit under a 60 inch cap with a 6 inch deck, which is 80 cases. Weight can cut the layer count before height does, so check both.
What do TI and HI mean?
TI is the number of cases in one layer (the tier), and HI is the number of layers on the pallet (the height). A pallet described as TI 16, HI 5 carries 16 cases per layer, 5 layers high, 80 cases in total. Warehouses, co-packers and 3PLs use TI by HI as the standard shorthand for a pallet configuration.
What is the standard pallet size?
The most common pallet in North America is the 48 by 40 inch GMA footprint. Other common sizes are 48 by 48, 42 by 42 and 36 by 36 inches, and the EUR pallet used across Europe is 1200 by 800 millimeters, about 47.2 by 31.5 inches. Grocery and mass retail programs almost always expect the 48 by 40.
How tall can a pallet be stacked?
There is no single rule. The cap comes from whatever binds first in your operation: rack beam openings, the height that lets loads double-stack in a trailer, clamp and forklift limits, or the stacking strength of the cases themselves. Many warehouse programs cap loads somewhere between 48 and 72 inches including the pallet. This calculator defaults to 60 inches and lets you set your own cap.
How much weight can a pallet hold?
A sound wood pallet of the common 48 by 40 build carries more than most case loads will ever reach, but the practical cap is usually set lower by rack beam ratings, trailer floor loading, and what a forklift or walkie can safely move. Use the weight cap your warehouse or 3PL quotes, and remember the pallet itself adds tare weight, commonly in the range of 30 to 50 pounds for wood.
What is cube utilization?
Cube utilization is the share of the available load space your cases actually occupy: case volume on the pallet divided by the pallet footprint times the usable stacking height. Low utilization means you are storing and shipping air, and since 3PL storage is commonly billed per pallet position, better utilization directly lowers cost per unit.
Does case orientation change how many fit?
Often, yes. Rotating the case 90 degrees changes how many columns and rows fit on the deck, and sometimes a leftover strip along one edge fits a row of rotated cases on top of the block pattern. This calculator tries both orientations plus the strip pattern and uses the best of them.
Can cases hang over the edge of the pallet?
They can, but overhang crushes corners, destabilizes loads, and violates most retailer and warehouse receiving standards, so many 3PLs will rework an overhung pallet at your cost. This calculator does not allow overhang: cases must fit inside the pallet footprint.
How many pallets fit in a truck?
A 53 foot dry van floor-loads 26 pallets of the 48 by 40 size in two straight rows, up to 30 when the pallets are turned, and as many as 52 when loads are low and stable enough to double-stack. That is exactly why a load height cap matters: a pallet built to double-stack moves the same cases on half the floor positions.
Why does cases per pallet matter for 3PL pricing?
Most 3PLs bill storage per pallet position per month, and many bill receiving per pallet as well. The same order packed into fewer, fuller pallets pays less to store and less to receive. Knowing your TI and HI also lets a 3PL quote you accurately before your freight ever arrives.
