One-Click Solution Targets $17.78 Cost of Failed Deliveries
FarEye's new integration with Amazon Key tackles one of the most expensive problems in last-mile logistics: drivers standing outside locked gates with nowhere to go. The partnership embeds Amazon Key's secure access system directly into FarEye's AI-driven delivery platform, giving drivers one-button access to gated communities and apartment buildings.
The numbers tell the story. Between 5-10% of U.S. packages fail on first delivery attempt, costing carriers an average of $17.78 per failure in re-routing and customer service. But Gaurav Srivastava, FarEye's chief product and technology officer, says access issues drive 30-50% of those failures.
"The drivers are unable to make a delivery 30% to 50% of the time because the locations are not accessible," Srivastava told FreightWaves. With drivers operating on strict one to two-minute delivery windows, a missing gate code often means an automatic failure and moving on to the next stop.
Perishable Goods Hit Hardest
For 3PLs handling temperature-sensitive shipments, the economics get brutal fast. Srivastava points to HelloFresh as an example: "The cost of failed delivery is actually $73. It's not even $17." The meal kit company has to prepare and ship a completely new box after each failed delivery—a cost structure that makes access solutions non-negotiable.
The integration works through a simple verification process. The system confirms the driver is at the correct GPS location with a verified shipment for that address. One button press in the app opens the gate with temporary access—no codes, no calling residents, no waiting.
Coverage Already Extensive
Amazon Key is already installed in over half of U.S. multi-unit buildings with secure access systems and covers roughly 70% of gated communities nationally. In major metros where FarEye is running pilot programs with customers like HelloFresh, coverage hits 95-98%. When the technology is present, it works 100% of the time.
"Missed deliveries aren't just a cost—they erode customer trust," Srivastava said. "By combining Amazon Key with FarEye's AI orchestration, carriers can deliver reliably and intelligently, even in the most constrained environments."
The partnership went live with its first customer in recent weeks, with broader rollout expected as more 3PLs look to eliminate one of last-mile's most persistent cost drivers.
